Challenges Facing Women and Girls in South Sudan

Women and girls are at the heart of South Sudan’s communities. They are mothers, farmers, entrepreneurs, students, teachers, and leaders. Yet many continue to face challenges that limit their opportunities and affect their well-being.

One of the major challenges is limited access to education. Many girls leave school early due to poverty, early marriage, or social expectations that prioritize domestic responsibilities over education. This limits future opportunities and contributes to cycles of inequality.

Economic barriers also affect many women. Despite playing a critical role in agriculture and small businesses, women often have limited access to land ownership, financial services, and business opportunities.

Gender-based violence remains a serious concern. Many women and girls experience violence in their homes, communities, and places of work. Such experiences can have long-lasting physical, emotional, and economic consequences.

Limited representation in leadership and decision-making processes is another challenge. While progress has been made, women continue to be underrepresented in many areas of governance, public service, and community leadership.

Despite these challenges, South Sudanese women continue to demonstrate resilience, innovation, and determination. Across the country, women are leading businesses, supporting peacebuilding efforts, educating their children, and contributing to community development.

Addressing these challenges requires collective action from government institutions, civil society organizations, community leaders, families, and development partners. By working together, we can create an environment where women and girls can thrive and contribute fully to the nation’s development.

Family FM remains committed to highlighting these issues and promoting solutions that advance equality, dignity, and opportunity for all women and girls.
